Warning: Fanboy rant ahead, read at your own risk. I will attempt to keep things spoiler-free for those of you who haven’t seen it yet.

Let me get something out of the way. I hate EVERYTHING. There isn’t a movie, song, painting, or event that I can’t find fault with in some way. Having said that, I want to go on record as saying: I LOVED the Avengers.

Marvel Studios has done something tremendous here. This was a journey starting with Iron Man, continuing with Thor and eventually Captain America. Most of the time, Hollywood gets it wrong. They rush through the mythology in order to get to the explosions. This time, however…the time was taken to actually develop each main character before throwing them into a big budget picture and expecting the audience to give a damn about their motivations.

On top of this, the man that was put in charge of this is none other than the nerd-king himself, Mr. Joss Whedon. I’ve followed Mr. Whedon’s career for quite a while now when he caught my attention with Buffy the Vampire Slayer. This isn’t to say he is infallible (I still think Dollhouse was a steaming pile of poo), but I do think he is a true bard, able to tell a story on many levels. It’s a testament to the writing that I found myself identifying with characters such as: a Norse god, a genius in futuristic armor, and an enhanced super soldier with ideals rooted in the 1940s. As much as this movie was hyped up, they could have Michael Bay’d it, or even thrown James Cameron at it and it would have made money. But, Marvel studios paid service to the geeks with this one.

The Avengers is a whirlwind of emotions. I found myself tensing during the action sequences, touched by the tender moments, and laughing aloud during the many hilarious scenes along the way. The pacing was excellent, with very few slow moments taking the immersion away. The actors all did their jobs exceptionally well, with Sammy J. doing his best NOT to overact the part, and Robert Downy Jr stealing each and every scene, no matter who he was sharing screen time with. The biggest surprise for me was Mark Ruffalo, playing Bruce Banner so perfectly that I will be saddened if and when it comes time for a sequel the Hulk actor is shuffled once again. They nailed it this time.

This isn’t to say the film is without fault. Tom Hiddleston isn’t very believable as a super villain, as the character’s motivations for being “evil” seem to shift from moment to moment depending on the needs of dialogue. Also, Captain America doing parkour through Manhattan during a full scale alien invasion seems a bit out of place. But this is just picking at the too crispy bits of a VERY well baked pie, because what is there is so perfectly done that I want to pay $9.00 to sit with strangers and see it again.

For someone who hates everything, that’s saying something.

9.5, and worth every minute of the 142 minute running time.

I’m going to be absent from the majority of the internet today. Avengers came out last night, and I am doing my damnedest to avoid spoilers, as I have plans to see the movie tomorrow with a friend.

Normally, I am all for reading spoilers and plot lines LONG before a movie comes out, but this is the motherfucking AVENGERS, and I have waited ~~four years~~ since my childhood to see this on the big screen.

Good, bad, I don’t give a shit. I just want to be surprised. Expect a full review when I recover from my pants-shitting geekness.
